Biography

John Mathewson is Chief Operating Officer at America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), the national association whose members provide coverage for health care and related services to millions of Americans. In this role, John serves as chief of staff, leads AHIP’s business operations, and helps to drive the organization’s strategic planning.

John has held several leadership roles for a variety of health care organizations including health insurance providers, hospital and home care companies.  Before joining AHIP in 2018, he consulted with several organizations to help them build sustainable strategies that improve health, value, and operational efficiency. During this time, he served as interim President & CEO for the DC Primary Care Association. Prior to that, he was Executive Vice President, Strategy & Operations for the HSC Foundation & Health Care System, an integrated health system and health plan for young people with disabilities where he served for 11 years.  John’s career also included roles at CIGNA and Kaiser Permanente in commercial markets and national accounts.

In addition, John has served on the Boards of the DC Primary Care Association, the Association for Community Affiliated Plans (ACAP), and the subsidiary companies of HSC Health Care System. He currently serves on the editorial advisory board for Managed Healthcare Executive magazine.

John’s rich and diverse experience gives him a unique perspective on how to work across the health care ecosystem to drive better health, outcomes, satisfaction, and value for patients and consumers. He has served as a thought leader with many businesses and state leaders on how to improve the health of populations with complex health needs and innovations for social determinants of health. His strategic approach reaches far beyond business growth, focusing on building sustainable business models that simultaneously work toward healthier people, organizations, and communities.

John earned a Master in Health Services Administration degree from The George Washington University with a Policy, Planning, and Marketing concentration, and an undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Howard University.
